After a relaxing summer unfortunately came to an end, we kicked the school year off with a classic movie night to bring our members back into gear.
We started the night off with a couple of ice breakers to get everyone in motion. First, with a little competition. BANG.The purpose of Bang is basically to avoid being “shot.” People proceed to be eliminated one by one from the giant circle until there are only two standing. The final two face-off in an intense, old-fashioned, cowboy gunfight.
This was followed by a “ Speed Friending" exercise to give everyone a chance to network and connect with one another. We had over 50 attendees, so we, of course, took advantage of the amazing opportunity for everyone to meet and network with each other — if it were even for at least 30 seconds per person. The diversity in the group from freshmen to seniors, every kind of engineer, and new and old SWE members was a great environment for making new connections whether they be social or professional.
Finally, we sat back and watched good old-fashioned Back to the Future. We had popped about twenty bags of popcorn in preparation for the event, and sure enough they were mostly gone by the end. We were very proud of the successful turn out we had for our first social event. Hopefully another movie night will be back in the future.
