As the season of deadlines approaches for internships, scholarships, and other applications, SWE's second general meeting aimed to help members develop their professional skills. Several of our board members have had incredible experiences interning at major companies such as Google, NASA’s JPL, HAAS Automation, and Southern California Edison. Our own board members lead the meeting with their own advice about resume-review, elevator pitches, and internship applying. Members got an opportunity to ask the board questions in order to maximize their chances of landing impressive internships and jobs. The meeting was organized into three rotating sections with their own topics. Resume-Review was led by SWE’s Team Tech Lead, Kyle Kinne. Kyle gave examples of impressive and not-so-impressive resumes, offered advice on do’s and don’ts, and gave constructive criticism to those who brought their resumes with them. The elevator pitch section was led by Jacob Poole, Melissa Gutierrez, Vanessa Coria, and Riya Sanghvi. This section included more one-on-one or two-on-one discussions where our members could comfortably practice their elevator pitch and one of the board members would give them feedback and points for improvement. The last group was on Internship Applying and was led by Sirina Nabhan, and our graduate students Brian Crites and Sangavi Pari. With experience from JPL, Google, and SCE, respectively, their insight on internship applying was greatly valuable. They sat in a group where they each shared their experience and advice. Afterwards, members were able to ask them any specific questions they had.
Overall, this professional development workshop was very impactful for our general members wanting to make themselves more competitive in internship applications during their undergraduate career.
