Our first Sweety Meet Up of Winter Quarter and of 2017 was a miniature social planned by our Social Chair, Melissa Schellinger Gutierrez. Sweety meet ups are designed for a smaller group to meet in a comfortable setting so that closer bonding can take place. This meet up included twelve sweeties in a conference room in Bourns Hall. We started the meeting with a small ice breaker where everyone shared a unique fact either about themselves or just a general fact. For example, one SWE member shared the fact that strawberries have more vitamin C than oranges! A surprising fact for residents of the city of Riverside which has endless pride in citrus.
After we had finished introducing ourselves and sharing facts, Melissa introduced us to a game of engineering charades! We divided into two teams: Team A+ and Team One-derful. We took timed turns trying to guess what our team member acted out — which was always STEM related. For example, SWE alumni and former President, Sandra Hernandez, was on Team One-derful and used her phone outlet to direct her team to the word “battery.” In the end, Team One-derful took home the victory. We also used Social Bingo Cards to spark conversations. This led us to talk about trips we have taken and trips we planned to take someday.
Overall, the sweety meet up was a great means to unwind in the beginning of the quarter as we met new people.
